AMT701 - Dr Tamyez - 01/07/2004
Dr Tamyez started this class by asking us to memorize the design definition which he gave us last week. In the 'memorizing game', we gathered in circle and Dr Tamyez point to anyone of us to start reading/reciting the definition. Each student will read/recite only 1 word and the student next to him/her will read/recite the next word. Those who failed to read/recite will have to depart the circle. Just like 'Survivor' one by one will depart when they fail to mention the right word.
After few students failed, the remaining were asked to read/recite more than one words as the game change its level of difficulties. Guess what, finally I'm the sole survivor in the game.
To be honest, i never memorize the definition. I only concentrate on what other student is reading/recite and guesstimate what word i have to say on my turn.
'Focus' should be the keyword for the game!
Enough with the game, in today’s class we have to present our definition of ‘When is design hopeless?’. Here are some of the definition which I managed to write down :
Mazlan – Design is hopeless when its no longer solving people’s problem. Does not fit human culture and not user-friendly.
Zaki - Design is hopeless if the design does not implement the elements of design.. (can’s get full of it!)
Saufi - Design is hopeless when there are no people to look, listen, criticize and appreciate because design is simply made for human.
Mine - Design is hopeless when it lacks form nor substance, cannot be appreciated no matter from which angle we look at it.
Victor Papanac wrote in his book ‘Design for the real world’ in 1974, saying “The most phony profession is advertising”. Further he claimed, “It advertises things which people don’t need, don’t care, with the money they don’t have”.
Talking about culture, Dr Tamyez thinks culture should be positive. Azlan on the other hand thinks that culture should be a mixture of positive (more) and negative (less).
On identity, one student said it can be portrayed by fashion. On what is identity, I think it is something that identify individual or group, physically or spiritually.
From dictionary.com :
Identity is…
1. The set of behavioral or personal characteristics by which an individual is recognizable as a member of a group.
2. The distinct personality of an individual regarded as a persisting entity; individuality.
