Today we talk about the different between art and design.

Art, by Dintionary.com :

1. Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.

a. The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.

9. Printing. Illustrative material.

Design :

1.
a. To conceive or fashion in the mind; invent: design a good excuse for not attending the conference.
b. To formulate a plan for; devise: designed a marketing strategy for the new product.

2. To plan out in systematic, usually graphic form: design a building; design a computer program.
3. To create or contrive for a particular purpose or effect: a game designed to appeal to all ages.
4. To have as a goal or purpose; intend.
5. To create or execute in an artistic or highly skilled manner.

Design needs sensitivity, design needs practice. Designing for human being is always a hard job because it involves emotions.

Designers must be sensitive to design by embarking design knowledge to non-designers. Designers must be ever ready to create new ideas and images which can be a solution to problem.

A quote from one architect (I can’t remember his name) : “Design is successful when its functioning”.
