Today we talk about the different between art and design.
Art, by Dintionary.com :
1. Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.
2.
a. The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.
b. The study of these activities.
c. The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group.
3. High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.
4. A field or category of art, such as music, ballet, or literature.
5. A nonscientific branch of learning; one of the liberal arts.
6.
a. A system of principles and methods employed in the performance of a set of activities: the art of building.
b. A trade or craft that applies such a system of principles and methods: the art of the lexicographer.
7.
a. Skill that is attained by study, practice, or observation: the art of the baker; the blacksmith's art.
b. Skill arising from the exercise of intuitive faculties: “Self-criticism is an art not many are qualified to practice” (Joyce Carol Oates).
8.
a. arts Artful devices, stratagems, and tricks.
b. Artful contrivance; cunning.
9. Printing. Illustrative material.
Design :
1.
a. To conceive or fashion in the mind; invent: design a good excuse for not attending the conference.
b. To formulate a plan for; devise: designed a marketing strategy for the new product.
2. To plan out in systematic, usually graphic form: design a building; design a computer program.
3. To create or contrive for a particular purpose or effect: a game designed to appeal to all ages.
4. To have as a goal or purpose; intend.
5. To create or execute in an artistic or highly skilled manner.
Design needs sensitivity, design needs practice. Designing for human being is always a hard job because it involves emotions.
Designers must be sensitive to design by embarking design knowledge to non-designers. Designers must be ever ready to create new ideas and images which can be a solution to problem.
A quote from one architect (I can’t remember his name) : “Design is successful when its functioning”.

No more Research Method and MIS Notes!
Since we were given hand-outs on both classes, my notes stops here. It will be a waste of time. However i will continue on Dr Tamyez's Design Issues classes. I think there's a lot to talk about regarding this class. How i wish each and everyone in my class knows how to utilize this free blog... : (
Very Busy maa...
Has been very busy for the past few days. I will start updating this blog after this weekend.
Cheers!

AMT701 - Dr Tamyez - 01/07/2004
Dr Tamyez started this class by asking us to memorize the design definition which he gave us last week. In the 'memorizing game', we gathered in circle and Dr Tamyez point to anyone of us to start reading/reciting the definition. Each student will read/recite only 1 word and the student next to him/her will read/recite the next word.
Those who failed to read/recite will have to depart the circle. Just like 'Survivor' one by one will depart when they fail to mention the right word.
After few students failed, the remaining were asked to read/recite more than one words as the game change its level of difficulties. Guess what, finally I'm the sole survivor in the game.
To be honest, i never memorize the definition. I only concentrate on what other student is reading/recite and guesstimate what word i have to say on my turn.
'Focus' should be the keyword for the game!
Enough with the game, in today’s class we have to present our definition of ‘When is design hopeless?’. Here are some of the definition which I managed to write down :
Mazlan – Design is hopeless when its no longer solving people’s problem. Does not fit human culture and not user-friendly.
Zaki - Design is hopeless if the design does not implement the elements of design.. (can’s get full of it!)
Saufi - Design is hopeless when there are no people to look, listen, criticize and appreciate because design is simply made for human.
Mine - Design is hopeless when it lacks form nor substance, cannot be appreciated no matter from which angle we look at it.
Victor Papanac wrote in his book ‘Design for the real world’ in 1974, saying “The most phony profession is advertising”. Further he claimed, “It advertises things which people don’t need, don’t care, with the money they don’t have”.
Talking about culture, Dr Tamyez thinks culture should be positive. Azlan on the other hand thinks that culture should be a mixture of positive (more) and negative (less).
On identity, one student said it can be portrayed by fashion. On what is identity, I think it is something that identify individual or group, physically or spiritually.
From dictionary.com :
Identity is…
1. The set of behavioral or personal characteristics by which an individual is recognizable as a member of a group.
2. The distinct personality of an individual regarded as a persisting entity; individuality.

AMT702 - Dr Ruslan - 29/06/2004 - Research Methodology
Generally, this is only an introductory session with Dr Ruslan. Definitely we must go through the good ol' 'suai-kenal' session before this class kicks-off.
Dr Ruslan talk a little bit about 'THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK' . This will be discussed further in next week's class.
Research element that consist of - methodologies, instruments and tools. Which will bring to Final Projects that can either be 'Verbalize' or 'Extrapolate'. What is extrapolate? According to Dictionary.com, it means : 1) To infer or estimate by extending or projecting known information. 2. Mathematics. To estimate (a value of a variable outside a known range) from values within a known range by assuming that the estimated value follows logically from the known values.
The first assigment is to come up with 5 Research Statements which has to be written in point-form. The research statements can be anything, as long as it is appropriate and relevant to the student's thesis titles / final projects?. But students must bare in mind that all the ideas and statements must be original - researchable and doable!
Here are some of the statements which i like to bring forward :
1) Graphic design elements : influence in the SMS and ICT culture in Malaysia
2) "Localized Branding" : the way to improve rural Malaysian products via ICT
3) Iconography and symbol in today's culture... well, i need to polish a bit more on this one and of couse i have 2 more statements to come up with!
AMT703 - Dr Kamy - 26/06/2004 - Introduction to Management Information System
This class is all about the ICT and its significance for today's designers and all walks of life! - I said so, : )
We discuss about -
1) how to manage information in research
2) how to manage information in workplace
We also talk about - database, spreadsheets, presentation, project scheduling and statistics.
Basiccally, today's class is purely an introduction to the PC and what it can do for us (for as long as we know how to operates it, of course!). Hardcopy from the powerpoint presentation is given.
AMT701 - Dr Tamyez - 24/06/2004
This is our very first class (Issues on Contemporary Design) with Dr Tamyez. In the beginning of the class (of coz after the 'suai-kenal' moments) he gave us our first assignment, that is to write in 15-30 words : "When is design hopeless?". Students must send their written opinion via email to Dr Tamyez so that it can be discussed in our next class.
Dr Tamyez stress on the importance of being 'relaxed'. And why is it so important to relax. On the quetion on what contributes to relaxation; we have come out with answers like : surroundings, colours, health, good companies/buddies etc.
What we should know before start designing? Since design is for human, we must consider the human aspects when we start designing such as : sex, age, race, culture, religion etc.
Quote from Dr Tamyez's own piece of mind : "God creates human beings, designers creates things for human beings".
Definition of design that Dr Tamyez asked us to memorize : "Design is the practice of analizing, creating and developing products and visuals for mass manufacture. Its aim is to achieve forms which are assured of acceptance before extensive capital investment has been made and which can be produced at a price that permits wide distribution and reasonable profits".
2nd quote from Dr Tamyez : "Listening with your eyes, seeing with your ears".
